Office of Spill Prevention and Response

Oil spills are unfortunate incidents that have the potential to devastate wildlife and land. To address that potential, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) created a highly sophisticated response system that goes to work in the event of a spill. Volunteers are an integral part of that system and are relied upon to answer the immediate call to support cleanup efforts. Volunteers are alerted in a moment's notice and the jobs assigned are based on response needs and volunteer talents. To help care for oiled wildlife, OSPR also uses volunteers who are pre-trained through the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at University of California, Davis. Only volunteers pre-trained through this network are allowed to work with oiled wildlife. However, volunteers are much needed and appreciated in all capacities.
